Soul Retrieval Soul Loss is a shamanic term used to describe loss or disassociation of some part of your vital essence. This usually happens during a trauma such as emotional or physical abuse, an accident, loss of a loved one, assault, rape, incest, divorce, surgery, or wartime experiences. The soul part leaves as a protective mechanism. In indigenous cultures, the soul part is retrieved by a shaman shortly after the trauma. In our culture, people can go their entire lifetime without the soul part. Someone may also lose part of their soul by giving it to a loved one through a desire to share themselves with another. In some cases, a soul part may be stolen. Symptoms that can result from soul loss include:
